Inventor and aerospace pioneer George Carruthers dead at 81

The American inventor and space scientist Dr. George R. Carruthers has died. Carruthers invented the Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph which was deployed on the lunar surface by the Apollo 16 astronauts in 1972. Carruthers also invented “Image converter for detecting electromagnetic radiation especially in short wave lengths” (U.S. Patent 3,478,216) in 1969. Dr. George Carruthers was 81 years old.
